Road accidents. Preliminary estimates 2010

During 2010, with reference to estimated values, the number of road accidents resulting in deaths or injuries in Italy was 207,000, with 3,998 killed and 296,000 injured persons.

Every day, during 2010, an average number of 567 road accidents, 11 deaths and 811 injuries occurred on the Italian road. Comparing this data with the previous year (2009), a decreasing of 3.9% for accidents, 3.7% for injuries and 5.6% for killed persons was recorded. This last percentage variation decreased by 10.3% in 2009, with respect to 2008. The mortality index in 2010, calculated by means the ratio between deaths and road accidents number per 100, was equal to 1.9 (mortality index was 2.0 in 2009).

In European Union (EU27) the number of killed persons in road accidents was 30,926, 11% less than the previous year (Source: European Transport Safety Council, Annual PIN report. Year 2011).
