Urban environment indicators

Urban waste collection was of 609.5 kg per inhabitant, an increase of 0.9% in comparison with 2009 after three years of a decreasing trend.

The percentage of recycled waste, out of the total about of urban waste, was of 31.7%, up by 1.4 percentage points from the previous year.

Regarding recycled waste, the excellent performances of Pordenone, Novara and Carbonia were contrasted by the negative achievements of three Sicilian provincial capitals: Messina, Siracusa and Enna.

Per capita water consumption for domestic use was of 66.7 m3 per inhabitant, down by 1.9% from 2009, showing a continuation of the contraction in water use recorded in the last nine years.

Regarding atmospheric pollution, the average number of days in which the threshold for human protection from PM10 was surpassed continued to fall (44.6 days), nearly ten days less that 2009.

Per capita gas consumption for domestic and heating use rose by 4.7% against the previous year, while there was only a slight fall in the domestic use of electric energy (-0.3%).

Turin, Mantua, Pescara and Iglesias approved acoustic zoning in their municipal territories in 2010.

Public transport in provincial capitals transported an overall 228.6 travellers per inhabitant, with a rise of 0.6% in comparison with 2009.

Each inhabitant in the 116 provincial capitals had access to 106.4m2 of green areas under public management, 3.1 m2 more for each inhabitant than in 2000.

Lastly, the use of solar panels installed on municipal buildings rose: average electric power, which reached 1.1 kW for each 1,000 inhabitants in 2010, recorded an increase of 114.9% against 2009.
